Alternative Steps to Fix iTunes Error 1601

Step 1 – If you are on a Mac open the “~Library/iTunes/Device Support” folder. On a Windows computer open, “c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\” folder. The “c” drive label assumes the standard hard drive labeling is used on your computer, but could be different if you have iTunes installed on a different directory.

Step 2 – Download the PwnageTool application to your computer.

Step 3 – Delete “x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw” from your computer and then run the PwnageTool program.

Step 4 – When asked by the Pwnage tool if you have ever “pwn’d” your iPhone before, select “no” as if this is the first time you have pwn’d your phone (even if it is not).

Step 5 – Follow the prompts in the tool to put the iPhone into full recovery mode.

Step 6 – Select the “Restore” option in iTunes using the new firmware that you have created with the Pwnage tool and iTunes error 1601 will be corrected.
