Boonana Trojan Horse

The Boonana Trojan Horse was discovered in October 2010 and is designed to affect computers running both the Mac OS X and Windows Operating Systems. The virus is designed to leverage social media sites such as Facebook by disguising itself as a video link on a message asking the recipient if they are in the video. Once installed on your computer, the Trojan will hijack user accounts to further spread and send information to a remote command and control server for the virus.

How Does the Boonana Trojan Horse Infect Your Computer?

The primary means of infection is through infected video attachments in social networking messages on sites such as Facebook. When the end-user clicks on the link in the message, the Boonana Trojan will launch as a Java applet. It will then proceed to download additional files to your computer to include an installer program which will launch automatically.

What Does the Boonana Trojan Horse Do To Your Computer?

Once the Boonana Trojan’s installer is launched, system files will then be modified to bypass the need for passwords on your computer. This will permit outside access to all files on the system. The virus will also be set to run invisibly in the computer’s background at boot. It will randomly establish communications with a command and control server to pass information from the infected computer. In parallel, the virus will hijack user accounts on your computer to further spread through sending fake emails and social medial messages. The Boonana virus is one of the first, cross-platform Trojans to be found and is advanced enough to contact alternative control servers if the primary ones are not found.
