How Does SVCHOST.exe Work?

To make computer based processes easy to function, Microsoft played around with its execution files and .dll files. In terms of programming, this makes it much easier. However, the only issue was that .dll files cannot be opened directly. They need to be opened through an existing exe file, and this is how the host file svchost.exe was created. The reason why you see so many svchost.exe files running is because there’s more than one single file. Your windows platform runs with a direct link to Microsoft. Microsoft uses several informational data from your PC to better its service. So, if every single service on your PC were run on one single svchost.exe file, and if that file got corrupted, your whole PC comes down.

To get rid of the many svchost.exe files in your task manager, there is one thing you can do. When you go to control panel, select the services tab or icon. This services sector of your Windows system is where all the svchost.exe files exist. Each service is associated with a different svchost.exe file. So, the best solution would be to disable the services that you don’t need. There would be several services on the list that you absolutely do not need. Have a look at the CPU usage of the svchost.exe files and see whether any of them are using large amounts of resources. If one single file is using a ton of CPU usage, you may need to disable it. Right click on each svchost.exe file and select go to Service(s), and this would give you information about what service that file is connected with. If you disable the service from starting up when you power on the computer, it will not show up in your task manager, and cause a major load.

How to Disable Windows Services

If you find yourself in a position where you need to disable windows services from your investigation of the svchost.exe process, you will need to know how to disable a Windows service. To do so:

Step 1 – Click the “Start” menu button followed by “Settings,” “Control Panel,” “Administrative Tools,” and the “Services” menu options.

Step 2 – Select the service to disable from the Service Utility program that is running by right clicking the service and then changing the “Startup Type” menu option to “Disabled” followed by the “Ok” menu button.

Step 3 – Exit the Service Utility program and restart your computer and the Windows Service that you disabled will now only be started manually and reduced the number of svchost.exe instances running on your computer.
