The VPN Error 800 is an error that you may run across while using a VPN connection for work or school. This error is caused when the remote terminal connection is not made due to the VPN tunnels failing to connect. It could be simply due to the server not being available or from the security settings being incorrectly set for the VPN network.
How to Fix the VPN Error 800?
There are several steps you can take to troubleshoot your VPN connection before needing to seek assistance from your IT support shop, department, or contractor. Some of these potential solutions include:
1 – Changing the VPN tunnel on your computer manually to the type of tunnel configured for your VPN. To do this, you would double left click the “Network Connections” icon on the Windows Taskbar. Then, Right click the VPN connection on the subsequent screen. Choose “Properties,” “Securities Tab” and select the VPN tunnel type. This will give you a more specific error code for the VPN failure to help you troubleshoot the issue more effectively.
2 – Ping the VPN server from your computer to ensure it is actually up. To do so, open your computer’s DOS prompt by selecting the “Start” menu and typing “Ping servername or IP address” in the “Open” text field followed by the enter 
key. If the server is not available, you will see a feedback message on the DOS screen indicating the server is not available.
3 – Verify your VPN security settings are configured properly. To do so, you will need to ensure you have the right client-side key installed on your computer for the VPN configuration. After you do this, if you are using L2TP, verify UDP port 1701 is not blocked on your computer’s firewall. If you are using IKEv2, make sure that you do not have UDP ports 500 and 4500 blocked on the computer. If you are using SSTP, you will need to make sure that you have the correct machine and trusted root certificate installed on your computer. All of these certificates should have been provided to you from your VPN manager or IT admin via CD or email to install.
