Error Code 5 is a Windows Operating System error that can drive you batty trying to resolve. When you get the error on your computer it will state, “Failed to Execute Target Process (Error Code 5)” and terminate the application that you are trying to use. The error comes from the zone protection bundled with Internet Explorer 7 on Vista and sometimes on XP.

When you run or try to open the file, if the datastream does not match your computer, the Error code 5 can be generated if your operating system configuration does not permit these files to be run or opened.

How to Fix Error Code 5?

The fix for most people for error code 5 is relatively straight forward. You will need to open the Windows explorer (Press the “Windows and E” keys simultaneously if you don’t know how to access the file explorer. Then, right click on the .exe file that is generating the error. Choose the “General” tab

 

on the properties menu and select the “Security” section. Then, choose the “unblock” button located on the “Advanced” menu tab and the error message will be eliminated. Note, that you will not see the “Unblock” option if blocking is not configured.
