A common error that can arise when you try to install Microsoft Office is getting error 1402. If you get the error, it will normally state something similar to: “Error 1402. Could not open key: <Keyname>. System error 1009”. If you get the error, it does not mean you can’t install Microsoft Office, but will need to do some troubleshooting on your computer in order to complete a successful installation. The steps may vary slightly to troubleshoot on your computer depending on the version of Windows being used.
What Causes Error 1402?
If you get error 1402 when trying to install Microsoft Office, the following conditions on your computer are likely causing the installation to fail:
1 – “User Profiles” is on
2 – The “active profile” on your computer has an issue
3 – You are trying to put Office XP or newer on a Windows 98 or Window Me Operating System.
How Can You Fix Error 1402?
There are three steps that you can take to troubleshoot and fix error 1402:
1 – Check and Repair the Windows Registry
If you are running Windows 98 or Window Me, they come with a built-in registry verification tool that can be used to scan and repair the computer registry for free. To do so:
- Click the “Start” menu and select “Programs,” “Accessories,” “System Tools,” and the “System Information” command.
- Click the “Tools” menu and choose the “Registry Checker” program.
- If you get a message stating that Windows found a problem with the computer registry, follow the default
screen instructions to restart your computer and repair the computer’s registry.
If you are running Windows XP or older, you can also manually run the registry repair tool on your computer if Windows did not automatically detect problems. To do so:
- - Select the “Start” menu followed by “Run” and enter “scanreg/fix” followed by the “enter” key.
- Follow the default on screen instructions to run the application and repair the registry.
After you have repaired the registry, attempt the Microsoft Office installation again.
2 – Use a Different Profile to Install Office
Sometimes you can get error 1402 if the profile on your computer is corrupted. A work around that Microsoft recommends after checking and repairing the computer registry is to attempt the Office installation using another profile on your computer.
3 – Prevent Profile Interference by Disabling User Profiles
If you try an alternative profile and have repaired the computer’s registry, then you will want to disable all user profiles and attempt the Office installation. To do so:
- Open the computer’s “Control Panel” and open the “Passwords” icon
- Choose the “All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings” menu option located under the “User Profiles” menu tab followed by the “Ok” menu button and restart the computer.
- Install Microsoft Office and turn on user profiles after installation is complete.
Note, if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, the specific menu options to select to conduct the above actions for repairing error 1402 will vary somewhat depending on your computer’s configuration.
