iPhone Guides: How to Transfer iPhone Apps to iTunes

A common task for iPhone users is to transfer purchased iPhone apps to their personal computer’s iTunes program. Some iPhone users get confused if their iTunes won’t let them save apps to the iTunes program thinking that there is something broken or computer malware has infected the computer. In order to transfer the apps to your computer, however, you will have to make sure that the computer has been authorized to be used with your iTunes Store account with the iTunes version 7 or newer.

Authorize Your Computer Before Connecting Your iPhone

Before trying to transfer your iPhone apps to your iTunes program, you will want to make sure that the computer is authorized before you connect the phone. In order to authorize your computer you will need to:

1 – Open the iTunes program on your computer by double clicking the program icon on your computer’s desktop.

2 – Choose the “Authorize Computer” menu option on the iTunes “Store” menu.

3 – Choose Apple ID or alternatively select AOL.

4 – Enter your Apple ID or AOL screen name and the password followed by clicking the “Authorize” menu button.

This authorization must be done for each account that you have made iTunes store or iPhone app purchases.

Alternatively, you can right lick the iPhone on the iTunes source list and click the “Transfer Purchases” menu option. On a Mac you can also “Ctrl Click” the iPhone.

What to Check if You Still Can’t Transfer iPhone Apps

If you still have the “Transfer Apps” menu option greyed out on iTunes, it may be a problem with the configuration settings on your iPhone. To remove any potential restrictions for app transfers you will want to select “Settings” followed by “General” and “Restrictions” on the phone and change the setting to “Off.” After you have changed the setting, you can reattempt the previous steps to transfer your iPhone apps.
