iPhone Guides: How to Make iPhone Ringtones for Free

The iPhone has become one of the most popular mobile phones used in the United States. A common problem that arises for iPhone users is creating a ringtone from an existing song in their iTunes library without having to pay for a song two times. If the music does not have DRM associated with it, you can do so for free on both Windows and Mac computers. The following steps are based off of the recent iTunes build on a Windows PC. Depending on your version of iTunes, operating system, and model of iPhone these steps may vary slightly.

Steps to Make iPhone Ringtones for Free

1 – Open your iTunes program by double clicking the program icon on your computer’s desktop.

2 – Play the song that you intend to make into a ringtone by double clicking the song name in your iTunes library. You will want to listen for the part of the song that you want to be the ringtone and note the number of seconds that have elapsed in play at the section you like on the iTunes player display.

3 – Note the start and stop times of the song you want to use for the ringtone. A ringtone created in iTunes should not be longer than 40 seconds in length.

5 – Enter the beginning time of the ringtone in the start time text field in minutes: seconds format followed by entering the ending time in the stop time text field.

6 – Choose the OK menu button and click the “Convert to AAC” iTunes button which will make a duplicate copy of the song in AAC format.

7 – Single left click the new song in the iTunes display and depress the “Ctrl + C” keys simultaneously. Then, left click a blank location on your computer’s desktop and enter the “Ctrl + V” keys.

8 – Right click the file saved to your computer’s desktop that will have a “.M4A” file extension and click the “rename” menu option to change the file extension from “yoursong.m4a” to “yoursong.m4r.” This step will be different based on the operating system that you are using. On a Mac, this step is normally done by clicking the file and choosing the “Get Info” menu option to change the file extension.

9 – Connect your iPhone to the computer and drag the new song to the iPhone icon in your iTunes display to add the new ringtone to your phone.

Thats it. If you have problems making a ringtone, it will likely be due to having copy protection embedded in the file from purchasing online. Most CD’s will allow you to import to iTunes and create ringtones without having to worry about potential DRM issues.
